Are LED masks worth the hype? We put one of today’s most popular models to the test — here are our honest thoughts.

Here’s a little fact about me: I love at-home skin care devices. In fact, there isn’t a tool out there I haven’t been willing to try. Jade rollers? I have five. Gua sha? I practice it almost every night. Scary-looking microneedling tools? I’m all over them. Still, for all my fascination with and general adoration of at-home devices, there is one in particular I’ve always been hesitant to try, and that’s an LED face mask. It’s not that I’m afraid of these weird, robotic-looking masks in any way; I’m just a bit skeptical of their effectiveness. After all, how much can a bunch of bright, colorful lights really transform the tone, texture, and firmness of my skin?
Rather than do my usual routine of agonizing endlessly over the answer, I decided to put one to the test — specificallyThe Light Salon’s bestselling Boost Advanced LED Light Therapy Face Mask— and honestly, I’m obsessed. For starters, unlike other LED products on the market, The Light Salon mask is the first LED mask that’s actually flexible. Made from soft silicone, it not only is completely portable — you can now mask freely around the house — it also molds to your face for a better fit, making it far more comfortable than the stiff, hard, plastic alternatives. As someone with a relatively small-shaped head, I also love that this one comes with adjustable Velcro straps to ensure there’s no slipping or sliding (although awkward hair creases do occasionally happen).
As for the convenience factor, I was surprised at how easily the LED treatments fit into my everyday routine. If there is ever a downside to experimenting with all these high-tech tools, it’s that they can be a little time-consuming, making my already lengthy daily skin care routine feel more like a chore than a moment of self-care and relaxation. However, with The Light Salon mask, 10 minutes three to five times a week is all that’s needed to achieve a professional-level treatment. Just slip it on over clean, dry skin morning or night, and go about your regular routine. After the recommended (and painless) 10 minutes, it switches off automatically. Its portable battery attachment is also easily charged, and the global plug adapters are genius for travel or charging on the go.
As is the case with any skincare device, LED masks are only as good as the results they produce, so let’s get right down to it: This one delivers. Like the more advanced in-office machines that inspired it, the Boost LED mask uses clinically proven wavelengths of red and near-infrared lights, which recent data has shown can help plump, lift, brighten, strengthen, and rejuvenate the skin over time. Red LED light specifically helps trigger collagen and elastin production, reduce inflammation, and even skin tone, while near-infrared light boosts circulation and aids in removing toxins so that the skin’s regeneration system works more effectively. As an added bonus, LED light enables the absorption of topical skincare products, making everything you apply immediately afterward that much more potent.
While The Light Salon recommends using the mask three times a week for at least four to six weeks to see optimal results, I can honestly say I noticed a difference in my skin after just one use. Before using the mask, my skin was looking rather dull and uneven thanks to a bit of redness and pigmentation left over from a recent stress-induced breakout (election season, am I right?). After just 10 minutes with the mask, though, I was shocked to see that my skin was noticeably brighter and more even. The blotchy redness that previously decorated my nose and cheeks had faded away, while spots of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation were definitely less visible. Those results only continued to improve over the next few treatments as my complexion grew plumper and more even. I swear, even my stubborn dark undereye circles, which no amount of sleep or vitamin C has ever been able to cure, appeared a bit brighter, which is just about all the reason I needed to make this mask a part of my regular skin care routine. The price tag may be a little hefty — it retails for $495— but it’s far less than what I’m actually willing to pay to fade those fine lines around my mouth and the dark circles hovering under my eyes, so consider me sold.
